TALK ABSTRACTS

10:00-11:00

Room 1 – BABY BOOM

Baby English classes are becoming more and more popular, and their diverse benefits being widely accepted by teachers, psychologists and child experts.  But how on earth do you teach English to babies in an effective way, and how can we make sure they are getting the absolute best out of our classes? This session will give you practical ideas for a range of different activities that will ensure your baby classes are as diverse, dynamic and impactful as possible.  You’ll watch footage of the ideas in practice and leave knowing the sky’s the limit for your babies!

Room 2 – WHO SAID GRAMMAR WAS BORING?

Do you ever feel that morale in the classroom drops when you tell your students you are about to do grammar? I know I do!   But don’t you worry, because there are tons of ideas to make grammar fun. In this practical session, I will be sharing games and engaging activities I use in my teen classes (PET and FCE) to practice key grammar points.

Room 3 - MEANINGFULL FILLERS

Warmers, fillers, and coolers are standard practice no matter the level. They are the perfect opportunity to develop students’ language skills while also having fun.  In this session, I’ll offer ideas to help you step away from the book and get your B2 and above students involved in some engaging, creative, and challenging activities that they will look forward to at the start and end of class.

Room 4 - LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

Films appeal to everyone both young and old and their influence on our culture is everywhere to be seen. For the English teacher, films are a rich source of material and inspiration and can be mined as far as the imagination lets us. In this session, we will look at how they can be incorporated into our lessons in useful and exciting ways to provide a range of activities such as grammar and official exam practice, role-play, atmosphere and of course fun! This talk will provide ideas for kids classes, teens and adults.

11:15-12:15

Room 1 – THE ARTS IN LANGUAGE LEARNING

When it comes to language learning, an old saying rings true: a picture is worth a thousand words. There is developing proof that the arts help children with language acquisition and that they support the development of cognitive skills.  Our students have many different learning profiles and we as teachers can help them acquire concepts and information through the arts as well as  through conventional language forms. In this session, I’ll be giving practical information on how to use pictures, drama, songs, projects and crafts to foster language learning.

Room 2 – #$&€! BE COOL!
Doing practice for the PET exam  in your classes can quickly become tedious and non effective if the same things are done over and over again. Why not spice things up? I´ll show you how to get creative with exam preparation and give you a variety of dynamic, out of the box ideas which are fun yet effective at the same time. All four skills will be looked at in this talk ensuring you approach your PET classes in an exciting way.  So #$&€!, Be cool!

Room 3 – MEANINGFUL FILLERS
Warmers, fillers, and coolers are standard practice no matter the level. They are the perfect opportunity to develop students’ language skills while also having fun.  In this session, I’ll offer ideas to help you step away from the book and get your B2 and above students involved in some engaging, creative, and challenging activities that they will look forward to at the start and end of class.

12:45-13:45

Room 1 – HOW DID YOU GET THEM TO DO THAT??!!
Every year my very young learner students surprise me more and more with their capabilities.  It’s amazing what children can do with the language, if their teacher has high expectations and has created a positive learning environment in the classroom.  In this session, we’ll watch one of my classes in action. You’ll be amazed at what the students can do, and we’ll discuss how to get your students doing the same in your own classes.

Room 3 – YES, WE CAN!

In the young learner classroom, you may find a gap in learner level.  Can we still expect them to learn and produce the same material if their levels are different?  Yes, we can! In this session we’ll look at ways to bridge the gap and keep all your students, weak and strong, involved in the lesson from start to finish through maximizing pairwork. SHIFT THE FOCUS

Room 4 – SHIFT THE FOCUS

This workshop goes over how you can make your teen classes more student-centered, taking the main focus away from the teacher and giving it to the students.  I’ll share ideas on how to minimize teacher-talk by making simple changes and implementing different types of activities. You will be working less, and your teens will be working more!  It’s a win-win.
